An assigned registered nurse makes regular visits and evaluates the patient's condition. They talk regularly with the patient's physician about appropriate continuing treatment. The nurse teaches the patient's family and friends to be caregivers and to manage pain and other symptoms. There is a nurse on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to any emergency. An assigned hospice nurse visits the patient at least once a week, or as needed, depending upon the patient's condition. Certified home care aides change beds and provide personal care such as bathing, shaving, nail care, shampooing and dressing. A nurse aide is available to visit a patient up to seven days per week, depending upon the patient's condition and the family's wishes. Licensed social workers help with psychological and emotional problems, arrange for delivery of community services and medical equipment, and provide counseling for patients and their families. Our chaplain consults with and assists the patient and their families with their spiritual concerns, complimenting the patient's own minister when appropriate. Trained hospice volunteers are available to assist patients and their families with various activities or to stay with the patient so that caregivers can go shopping, enjoy social engagements or have some free time to run errands or simply attend events with family and friends. Our social workers help the family through the grief process for at least one year following a patient's death. They provide educational home visits, periodic written materials and follow-up phone calls. Grief workshops are also available. |
